The Hidden Danger in America's Rail Yards

For decades, railroad workers across the United States went to work each day unaware that the very materials around them could one day threaten their lives. Asbestos was everywhere in the railroad industry. It lined the boilers of steam engines, formed the gaskets that sealed locomotive parts, and appeared in brake linings that workers handled regularly. Even the humble railroad ties often contained asbestos cement. The connection between railroad asbestos exposure and serious diseases like mesothelioma and lung cancer was not widely understood until the late twentieth century, and by then, many workers had already spent years breathing in dangerous fibers.

I have spent years studying occupational disease patterns, and the story of railroad workers is one of the most troubling. Unlike a factory worker who might encounter asbestos in one specific area, a railroad employee could face it in dozens of ways over a career. From repairing a locomotive boiler to replacing brake linings on a freight car, the opportunities for inhaling asbestos were constant. And because many of these tasks happened outdoors or in poorly ventilated spaces, workers often assumed they were safe. That assumption was wrong.

Steam engines ran hot, and the parts that held heat needed insulation. Asbestos was woven into gaskets, packed around boilers, and sprayed onto pipes. Brake linings, which generated friction and heat, were made with asbestos fibers. When workers replaced those parts, they sanded, cut, and ground them, releasing microscopic fibers into the air. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration now sets strict limits on asbestos exposure, but those regulations came too late for many.

Railroad workers were not just exposed during repairs. Even routine operations could stir up asbestos. When a locomotive moved, vibrations could shake loose fibers from old insulation. When a worker swept a rail yard, they kicked up dust that contained asbestos. The Environmental Protection Agency eventually banned most uses of asbestos, but the legacy of railroad asbestos exposure remains. Many workers who retired in the 1970s and 1980s are now being diagnosed with asbestos disease, and younger workers who spent time in older equipment are also at risk.

Why Railroad Workers Are Especially Vulnerable

The nature of railroad work makes exposure hard to avoid. Unlike a construction site where asbestos might be sealed off during demolition, a locomotive is a confined space. When a worker climbs into a boiler room or a cab to repair a steam engine, they are in close quarters with asbestos for hours. The fibers stay in the air long after the work is done. And because railroad workers often move between different types of equipment, they may encounter asbestos in forms they do not recognize. A gasket from one manufacturer might contain asbestos, while a similar part from another might not. The worker has no way to know.

Union Carbide and John Crane were among the companies that supplied asbestos-containing products to the railroad industry. Union Carbide produced raw asbestos and asbestos-containing materials, while John Crane manufactured gaskets and packing that were used in locomotives and rail equipment. These products were standard for years. When a worker handled a John Crane gasket, they might have been exposed to high levels of asbestos without any warning. The same is true for brake linings produced by other manufacturers. The lack of labeling and safety data sheets meant workers had no idea what they were handling.

Asbestos fibers, once inhaled, can lodge in the lining of the lungs and remain there for decades. Over time, they cause inflammation and scarring that leads to mesothelioma, a rare cancer that affects the lining of the lungs or abdomen. Mesothelioma has no cure, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms and prolonging life. Lung cancer is another risk, especially for workers who also smoked, though even nonsmokers can develop lung cancer from asbestos alone.

Asbestos disease does not appear overnight. It can take twenty, thirty, or even forty years after the first exposure for symptoms to show. That long latency period means a worker who left the railroad in the 1980s might only now be diagnosed with mesothelioma. By that time, the worker may have forgotten the exact jobs they did or the products they handled. But the medical evidence is clear. When a person who worked around steam engines, locomotives, and brake linings develops mesothelioma, the link to railroad asbestos exposure is strong.

Other conditions include asbestosis, a scarring of the lung tissue that makes breathing difficult, and pleural plaques, which are areas of thickening on the lung lining. While pleural plaques themselves are not cancerous, they indicate significant asbestos exposure and can be a precursor to more serious disease. The personal injury and wrongful death claims that arise from these cases often hinge on proving that the worker was exposed to asbestos from a specific product or worksite.

Legal Considerations for Pennsylvania Railroad Workers

Pennsylvania has a long history with railroads. Philadelphia was a hub for rail transport, and many workers spent their careers in the state's rail yards and maintenance shops. The legal landscape for railroad asbestos exposure claims in Pennsylvania is shaped by the Federal Employers Liability Act, which governs injuries to railroad workers. Unlike workers' compensation, FELA requires the worker to prove that the railroad was negligent in some way. That might mean showing that the railroad knew asbestos was present and did not protect workers, or that it failed to provide safe equipment.

The statute of limitations is another critical factor. In Pennsylvania, a personal injury claim for asbestos exposure must generally be filed within two years of the date the worker knew or should have known that their illness was caused by asbestos. For mesothelioma, that date is often the date of diagnosis. But because the disease can take decades to appear, workers need to act quickly once they learn of their condition. Waiting too long can bar a claim entirely, even if the exposure was clear.

Wrongful death claims follow similar rules. If a worker dies from an asbestos-related disease, their family may have a claim for loss of companionship, lost wages, and funeral expenses. Again, the statute of limitations applies, so families should seek legal advice promptly. The complexity of these cases makes it essential to work with an attorney who understands both the medical aspects of asbestos disease and the specific laws that apply to railroad workers.

What Workers and Families Should Do Now

If you or a family member worked on the railroad and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma or lung cancer, there are steps you can take. First, gather any records you have of your employment, including job titles, dates, and the types of equipment you worked on. Photographs, pay stubs, and union records can all help. Second, note any products you remember handling, especially brake linings, gaskets, and boiler insulation. If you recall names like John Crane or Union Carbide, write those down. Third, speak with a doctor who specializes in occupational lung disease to confirm the diagnosis and document the link to asbestos.

Finally, talk to a legal professional who handles railroad asbestos exposure cases. The laws are specific, and the evidence needed to prove a claim can be difficult to gather without help. A good attorney will know how to track down old product records, interview coworkers, and work with medical experts. The goal is not just compensation, but accountability. Companies that knew about the dangers of asbestos and did nothing should be held responsible.

They deserve to know the risks they faced and to have access to justice when those risks become reality. The story of railroad asbestos exposure is a cautionary tale about the cost of progress, but it is also a reminder that informed action can make a difference. Whether through medical monitoring, legal claims, or simply sharing information with the next generation of workers, there is still time to address the harm that was done.

A Final Word on Prevention

For current railroad workers, the danger is not over. While the use of asbestos has declined sharply, older locomotives and equipment still contain asbestos materials. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency continue to enforce regulations, but the responsibility also falls on employers to provide proper training and protective gear. Workers should ask about the materials they handle and request safety data sheets when they are not provided. Simple steps like wearing a respirator and using wet methods to control dust can reduce exposure, but only if workers know the risk exists.

The legacy of railroad asbestos exposure is written in the lives of workers who developed mesothelioma, lung cancer, and other asbestos diseases. But it is also written in the efforts of those who have fought for safer workplaces and for justice after the fact. Understanding the history, the science, and the legal options is the first step toward protecting yourself and your family.
