Understanding the Invisible Risk

Radon gas is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the decay of uranium in soil, rock, and water. It is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, which makes it impossible to detect without proper equipment. For homeowners in St. Louis, Missouri, radon exposure is a real concern because the geology in this region can produce elevated levels. The EPA has classified parts of Missouri as Zone 1, meaning the average indoor radon level is expected to be higher than the national average. This is not a scare tactic; it is a practical reason to take radon measurement seriously.

I have spent years working with homeowners who had no idea their basement or first floor contained dangerous levels of radon. The common thread is that they never tested. They assumed that because they could not see or smell anything, the air was safe. But radon in homes does not announce itself. The only way to know if you have a problem is through a proper radon test. And not all tests are the same.

Short-Term vs. Long-Term Radon Tests

When people first consider testing, they often encounter two basic options: a short-term radon test and a long-term radon test. A short-term test, using a charcoal canister or an alpha-track detector, stays in your home for two to seven days. It gives a quick snapshot. A long-term test, also often using an alpha-track detector, remains in place for 90 days or more. It provides a more accurate average of radon levels over a year, because radon levels can fluctuate with weather, seasons, and how you use your home.

I have seen homeowners rely solely on a short-term test and then make decisions based on that single reading. That can be misleading. A short-term test might catch a spike or a lull, but it does not show the full picture. The EPA recommends that if you test for less than a year, you should follow up with a second short-term test, or better yet, use a continuous radon monitor for a more precise reading. Continuous monitors measure radon levels hour by hour and can detect patterns that a passive device cannot.

What a Professional Radon Test Looks Like

A professional radon test, such as those performed by Air Sense Environmental in St. Louis, goes beyond simply placing a detector on a shelf. The technician places the device according to strict protocols: at least 20 inches above the floor, away from drafts, heat sources, and exterior walls. They use a continuous radon monitor that records data over the test period. This gives you a detailed log of radon levels, not just a single number at the end.

One advantage of this approach is that you can see if levels are consistently high or if they spike only during certain conditions. For example, I worked with a family whose radon level measurement came back at 6.0 pCi/L, which is above the EPA action level of 4.0 pCi/L. But the continuous monitor showed that the spikes happened mostly at night when the house was closed up. That detail helped us design a radon mitigation system that worked with their lifestyle, not against it.

Professional radon testing also includes a clear explanation of the results and the next steps. You are not left with a lab report that might as well be in another language. The technician walks you through the numbers, explains what they mean, and if the levels are high, helps you understand your options for radon remediation or radon mitigation.

Why Radon Measurement Is the Only Way to Know

There is no substitute for actual radon measurement. You cannot guess based on your neighbor’s test. Radon levels vary dramatically from house to house, even on the same street. Soil composition, foundation cracks, sump pumps, and construction materials all affect how much radon gas enters your home. The radon map for Missouri shows general zones, but it does not tell you about your specific property. Only a test can do that.

I remember a case in a newer subdivision in St. Charles County. Every house on the street was built by the same builder in the same year. One home had a radon level of 12 pCi/L. The house next door tested at 1.2 pCi/L. No one could have predicted that difference. The family in the high-level home had been living there for five years without testing. Their children played in the basement every day. That kind of story haunts me, because it was entirely preventable.

Radon measurement is not expensive compared to the peace of mind it provides. A professional test with a continuous radon monitor typically costs a few hundred dollars. Radon mitigation, if needed, can run a few thousand. But consider the alternative: long-term exposure to radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, according to the EPA and the Health Department. The risk is real, but it is manageable.

Choosing the Right Radon Detector

If you decide to test on your own, you have several choices. The most common are charcoal canisters and alpha-track detectors. Charcoal canisters are for short-term tests only. They absorb radon particles over a few days and are then sent to a lab. Alpha-track detectors can be used for both short-term and long-term tests. They track alpha particles emitted by radon decay and are more suitable for long-term monitoring.

For the most accurate picture, I recommend a continuous radon monitor. It plugs into a wall outlet and takes readings at intervals, often hourly. Some models even connect to your phone. The downside is cost; they are more expensive than passive detectors. But if you want a thorough understanding of your radon level measurement over time, a continuous monitor is worth the investment.

Whichever method you choose, follow the instructions exactly. Do not place the detector in a bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room. Keep it away from windows and doors. And do not move it during the test period. A compromised test is worse than no test, because it gives you false confidence.

What to Do If Your Radon Level Is High

If your test shows a radon level at or above the EPA action level of 4.0 pCi/L, you should take action. The most common solution is radon mitigation, which typically involves installing a vent pipe system and sometimes a fan to pull radon gas from beneath the house and release it outside. This is called sub-slab depressurization. In some cases, sealing cracks in the foundation and improving ventilation can help, but these are usually not sufficient on their own.

Radon remediation is not a DIY project for most homeowners. It requires knowledge of soil dynamics, foundation construction, and airflow. A qualified professional will assess your home’s layout, check the soil type, and design a system that works for your specific situation. After installation, a follow-up radon test is essential to confirm that the system is working. The goal is to bring your radon level measurement below the action level, ideally below 2.0 pCi/L.

I have seen mitigation systems that reduce radon levels by more than 90 percent. It is a proven technology. But it only works if you know you have a problem in the first place. That is why testing is the first step.

The Bigger Picture for St. Louis Homeowners

Living in St. Louis, Missouri, means living in a radon zone where the risk is above average. The radon map for the state shows that many counties, including St. Louis County and St. Charles County, are in Zone 1. That does not mean every home has high radon, but it does mean that testing is not optional; it is necessary. The Health Department in Missouri recommends testing for all homes, regardless of age or foundation type.

I have tested homes built in the 1800s with stone foundations and brand-new houses with poured concrete slabs. Both can have elevated radon. I have also tested homes where the owners had already installed a mitigation system but never retested to confirm it was working. In several cases, the system had failed or was never properly installed. A retest caught the problem.

Radon measurement is not a one-time event. It should be done every few years, especially if you make major structural changes to your home, such as finishing a basement or adding a new foundation. It is also a good idea to test after a significant seismic event, because shifting soil can create new pathways for radon gas.

Moving Forward with Confidence

If you have never tested your home for radon, now is the time. The process is simple, and the results are actionable. Whether you choose a short-term radon test with a charcoal canister, a long-term test with an alpha-track detector, or a professional radon test with a continuous radon monitor, the important thing is to start. The information you gain will help you protect your family and your investment.

I have seen too many homeowners wait until it is too late. Radon does not cause immediate symptoms, so people put it off. But the science is clear: prolonged exposure to high levels of radon gas is harmful. The good news is that radon measurement is straightforward, and radon mitigation is effective. You do not have to live with uncertainty. You can know the facts and take control.

For those in the St. Louis area, professional radon testing services like Air Sense Environmental provide the expertise and equipment needed to get accurate results. They use continuous radon monitors that give you a detailed radon level measurement over time, and they explain what your results mean in plain language. That kind of clarity is invaluable when you are making decisions about your home’s air quality.

At the end of the day, radon measurement is not just a box to check. It is a way to ensure that the air you breathe indoors is safe. And that is something every homeowner deserves.
